Of course one should inform himself about the country he is about to visit. And learning some basic words is a sign of respect (and talent !), which will be appreciated everywhere. Yet if you make a tour of say, Europe (five, six countries) in one week, as many Japanese tourists do, it is simply not feasible to learn even those 5-10 most basic words in each language . Actually I have hardly ever heard a Japanese tourist saying a single word in local language abroad (this however I do not take as lack of respect, as being fast with suspecting people of disrespect is disrespectful in itself). Plus there is the understandable fear that false spelling or even wrong intonation alone will make the tourist inadvertently say something absurd or even embarrassing. For all these reasons Mr. Nobita should not be so demanding towards Western tourists visiting Japan.
