Yanis is oversimplifying. China does have a tradition of imperialism. Just ask Tibet and Vietnam. And imperialism has other forms than repeating Victorian gunboat imperialism ("navy vessels off San Diego"): Chinese trade is ultimately state controlled. China could by means of political control of economic entities block the Panama Canal for US vessels.

I have heard exactly the same about Japan 40 years ago. And then they started stagnating and dying out. China is already slowing down - and it is not only a usual business cycle. China is being / will be massively hit by its one child policy. Young Chinese know that and their mood is gloomy. I wish no bad to China. Yet your idea that tendencies go on forever stands in opposition to experience.

@ You will further slow down for the reasons I have mentioned. Why you introduce the issue of relations to the USA is a riddle.

Japan did not falter because its ties with the USA. China has massive internal problems, which have nothing to do with international relations. When it come sto this topic, China of course is dependent on Western demand for their goods.
