The narrative of post Soviet Ukraine (speaking Russian for the most part) being markedly different from post Soviet Russia is made for naive Westerners, who love to think in stereotypes.

@comment8767 This I do not know. What the discussion is about, is unclear: The opening posting compares the present Russian Army to the Wehrmacht. So either its author does not know that the Wehrmacht treated their soldiers very well and made an counter-intentional compliment to Russia. Or he refers to how the Wehrmacht acted towards others. Having two choices I took the one which does not imply that Hans Walter is ignorant or incapable of discerning internal vs. external.

@carlosandleon Thanks for providing me with credible inherited first-hand information. However, as that baby skewering accusation was held against Germans in WW I and on some other occasions, I am inclined to take it as a standard propaganda tool.

@MrObvious-tg8lz Not being markedly different is being the same ? Speaking the same language to a large part is being the same ? Are you serious ? Or are you simply unable to perceive gradual differences ? And think that two countries are either totally different or the same ? Read my comment again. If you have counterarguments pointing to these two countries being markedly different, then forward them.

@MrObvious-tg8lz No, that was not my implication. Actually I have not implied anything, I expressed my view clearly enough. It is you fault when you take "not markedly different" / "speaking the same language" as implying to mean "being the same" and then go on to abolish that imagined argument. See, it is a problem when people do not debate relating to statements made, but with imagined hidden meanings.

@MrObvious-tg8lz My debating skills are superb. You would discover that if you managed to relate to my original posting. A good reaction e.g. would have been to ask "where do you see strong similarities between Russia and the Ukraine ?" But instead you found it proper to debunk the imagined argument that these two countries are the same. And this error I have outlined in my subsequent posting. As a side issue I also have addressed the use of childish emojis.

If one would see them that way, I won by walkover: I delivered a statement, you tried to debunk a different statement. And after I have corrected that misunderstanding and after I even helped you to ask a relevant critical question, you still did not pick up the topic. See, one can very well win without a fight, namely in case his opponent runs away. But the main issue in my mature world is the missed chance of a debate. Why were you afraid ?

Why should I, apart from that talk, about my statement when you made no counterargument nor asked anything ? Now that this is not a debate about the topic of Russia and Ukraine but a debate about a non debate I have already said a couple of times. Why do you find it necessary to confirm this again? As you keep repeating that you gave me a worthy original response : The only one I got was in essence "no, these countries are not the same"- which again, is off topic. Being both a superb and a constructive debater, let me ask: Was there some other response, which maybe got lost ?

@MrObvious-tg8lz After having corrected all kinds of misunderstandings on your side, including the imagined implication that shared language makes the two countries the same, being a noble debater I invited you to ask where I see the similarities or to counter my general statement. However you stubbornly did not take this chance but evaded into debating who won a non-debate and who didn't. Well, you missed a chance to gain some deeper knowledge about a complex part of the world, in which a war dangerous to all of us is being currently fought.

@MrObvious-tg8lz Even your theoretical knowledge about debate is faulty. Ever heard about an opening statement ? Which shall be substantiated in course of debating ? Ever heard about the difference between a debate and a paper or thesis ? Ever heard that a debate lives from an exchange of views delivered in relatively small portions ? Even more so here on youtube ? Apparently you have not. More disastrously you are still captured in that childish notion that debating is conquest, pushing one's opinion, imposing one's views, with the burden of proof being on the imposer's side. It seems that I was right with pointing at your overuse of emojis. By sticking to that infantile notion you completely miss the chances of obtaining valuable information, of reexamining one's own views, of constructive synthesis. It takes two to debate. And it takes sincere curiosity instead of that strange attitude that one is entitled to be convinced with no effort on his side.

@MrObvious-tg8lz I had a good deal of meaningful debates here. A brief opening statement, a challenge, then elaboration, arguments, counterarguments, always sticking to the topic, clearing misunderstandings quickly without endless reiteration how they came around - and all this resulting in new insights on both sides. That is how mature people debate. Now if you argue against what you only imagined to be my opening statement and then you are informed that it said or meant something else, then it is up to you to address the real thing. A good reaction would be like" I see. So if your real argument was this and that, what is it based on ?". Or "..even though you real argument is different from what I took it to be, I still disagree." But if it is below your Entitled Dignity of The Rather Uninformed Typical American to show curiosity and to put some effort into interaction, then you will remain just that. However, being benevolent I do hope that you and your fellow countrymen will regain the level of maturity the generations before you have achieved in their times.

@MrObvious-tg8lz So a thesis is not used in debate, but in scientific discourse. See, it is not enough to look up some the definition of some term. One shall be able to understand that definition and relate it to the various forms of human interaction.

@carlosandleon I am not sure that their military was extremely brutal as a rule. Yes they executed prisoners of war, yet that is a far cry from what SS units did to civilians. Yes, they committed atrocities in Korea, yet that was some special units.
