@chitownladyj Canada's relationship to the crown and the commonwealth is all performative. No one in the UK gets a say in what happens in Canada. Canada is a sovereign nation.

Russ doesn't recognize Canada as a sovereign nation (like many other Americans) because we were once a British colony and continue to have good relations with the UK.

@alexrozynski7616 There's no grey area. If the Monarchy ever tried to do more than be a superficial figurehead, people would revolt, and they'd be immediately cut out of even that role.

@alexrozynski7616 I'm not sure what money you think we're paying. We pay for the Governor General and the Lieutenant Governors and that's it. When it comes to government waste, that's pennies. And no, we don't go to the Monarch, we go to the Governor General who is also symbolic. Again, if there was ever any issue where they did more than just rubber stamp, the position would be eliminated or they'd get themselves a new Governor General to do as they're told. We also spend money on royal visits, but we'd be spending money on any head of state visit. The relationship with the monarchy is symbolic but negligible.
