@iwrotewords510 Originally the book was called "The Mutants" then they decided that no one would know what that would mean, so they re-named it to X-men as the "X" gene is the gene that gives them their mutant powers. Of course, no one knew what an X-man was either but the name stuck any ways.

Not long before they change the names of the characters to improve their inclusiveness as well. The aforementioned Wokerine, GayIcePerson, UniquelyVisionedPerson, MarySue, AbundantlyFollicleScientist, Bi-PolarGirl, SpicyCajunExoticDancer, IndependentWoman, etc. etc.
