"China is home to 55 officially recognized ethnic minority groups, many of which have their own languages. These languages belong to several language families, including Sino-Tibetan, Altaic, Tai-Kadai, Indo-European (Tocharian), and Hmong-Mien, reflecting the country's complex tapestry of ethnicities and cultures.
Estimates of the total number of languages spoken in China range from over 100 to more than 200. Ethnologue, a comprehensive reference work cataloging all of the world’s known living languages, lists 299 languages for China as of my last update in April 2023. This figure includes languages across the spectrum of linguistic vitality, from those that are widely spoken to others that are endangered or nearly extinct."
