"You're describing a tactic that can be associated with a strategy known as the Overton Window or shock politics. This method involves introducing an extreme or shocking idea to shift the bounds of what is considered acceptable discourse, thereby making less extreme actions or policies seem more reasonable by comparison.
In the case of Donald Trump's rhetoric and behavior, analysts have observed several patterns:
1. Shock and Distract
He often makes highly provocative statements or takes unexpected actions (e.g., suggesting the purchase of Greenland) that dominate media coverage and public discourse. This diverts attention from other issues or controversies, allowing other actions or policies to proceed with less scrutiny.
2. Negotiation Tactic
Trump frequently starts with an extreme position as part of his negotiation style. By doing so, he shifts the frame of discussion toward his goals. When he later settles on a more moderate action, it appears as a compromise, even if it’s still aligned with his original intent.
3. Controlling the Narrative
By keeping the media and public focused on his most shocking remarks, he maintains control of the conversation. This tactic can marginalize criticism of other important issues or downplay opposition to subtler actions.
4. Normalization of the Unthinkable
By repeatedly making shocking or outrageous claims, he can desensitize the public to behavior that would otherwise provoke significant backlash. Over time, this shifts societal expectations and what is considered "normal."
5. Testing the Waters
Some of his extreme proposals might be a way of gauging public reaction. If an idea garners enough support or doesn't face substantial pushback, it might advance further. If it is widely rejected, he can claim it was a joke, misinterpreted, or part of a broader negotiation.
Example of the Greenland Proposal
The idea of buying Greenland was widely ridiculed, yet it dominated global headlines. This could have served multiple purposes:
Distracting from domestic controversies or international tensions.
Testing the viability of bold geopolitical maneuvers under his administration.
Shifting perceptions of what constitutes ambitious U.S. policy.
This approach aligns with broader strategies of disruption and control that Trump has often employed, reflecting his background in business negotiations and reality TV. Understanding this dynamic can help contextualize seemingly bizarre actions and uncover underlying motives."

@vivalaleta "On August 23, 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed what came to be known as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact after the Soviet and German foreign ministers, Vyacheslav Molotov and Joachim von Ribbentrop. To the world, it was a nonaggression pact. While many suspected the countries also conducted territorial horse-trading, it was not until the Nuremberg trials following World War II that the general population learned of the secret protocols that delineated Soviet and German “spheres of mutual interest in Eastern Europe.” The protocols partitioned Poland between the two powers while ceding Finland, the Baltic states, and Bessarabia (which had been part of Romania and largely aligns with modern-day Moldova) to the Soviet Union. Germany invaded western Poland roughly a week later, on September 1, 1939, and on September 17 the Soviet Union invaded eastern Poland. On September 22 the Soviet and Nazi militaries held a joint military parade in Brest-Litovsk."

"It is bold men and women, yearning for freedom and opportunity, who leave their homelands and come to a new country to start their lives over. They believe in the American dream. And over and over, they make it come true for themselves, for their children, and for others.
They give more than they receive. They labor and succeed. And often they are entrepreneurs. But their greatest contribution is more than economic, because they understand in a special way how glorious it is to be an American. They renew our pride and gratitude in the United States of America, the greatest, freest nation in the world -- the last, best hope of man on Earth."
-President Ronald Reagan on Jan. 19, 1989

@bobthebuilder4683 Trump attacked the elections, our democracy, the Capitol building! He was a threat to democracy. He is a racist, he is corrupt, he praised dictators, he threw our trade partners under the bridge, he tried to break up NATO, he was incompetent, he is stupid, he was unqualified, he was selfishly trying to enrich himself at the expense of the American people. YES. We CONSTANTLY attacked Donald Trump as each day was even more of a shitshow than the day before with him.

@Valentin82.

@joehfletcher You mean a rebuttal to your very racist false claim? China is very diverse. I know, you imagine it a monoculture because you can't distinguish China and Japan. I get that about you.
"China is home to 55 officially recognized ethnic minority groups, many of which have their own languages. These languages belong to several language families, including Sino-Tibetan, Altaic, Tai-Kadai, Indo-European (Tocharian), and Hmong-Mien, reflecting the country's complex tapestry of ethnicities and cultures.
Estimates of the total number of languages spoken in China range from over 100 to more than 200. Ethnologue, a comprehensive reference work cataloging all of the world’s known living languages, lists 299 languages for China as of my last update in April 2023. This figure includes languages across the spectrum of linguistic vitality, from those that are widely spoken to others that are endangered or nearly extinct."

They're talking about propaganda in every country but there's nothing like the disinformation coming out of Russia and this appears to be a centuries long pattern of gaslighting others, invading, exterminating. The USA did it too briefly in our history, we admit, we confess, we repent, we're upset about it, we fight to never repeat these things. Right? But in Russia, it seems there are too many using tactics of gaslighting, projection, playing victim, whataboutisms, and blaming others and so the cycle of Russian imperialism never stops.
