  2. Ron Kantrowitz it was about the states deciding whether or not they wanted to keep that institution as opposed to the federal government telling them what to do about it. They (the North) did not have any jurisdiction in the matter as this, unfortunately, was outside of the scope of federal power.  It was an encroachment on property rights. Slaves were property. Sorry. That's just the way it was. If the north loved black people so much and wanted to free the slaves, why didn't they just offer to buy them and set them free? Because that wasn't at all what it was about. It was about increasing the reach of federal power and subjugating the will of the states, which were meant to be a bulwark against federal power.  Slavery existed across the world, not just the American south. In fact, of all the places you could end up as a slave, the American south is probably the best. Damn sure didn't want to go to South America or the middle east. I love how you liberals like to judge those living in a completely different era by your own modern 2015 morals and sensibilities. The things that occurred historically that would allow you to have those sensibilities had not occurred yet. Slavery was a world wide institution and had been throughout human history up until that time. You reactionaries have no sense of context or nuance or complication. It's always this simple ass Mickey Mouse one of only two options, good guys vs bad guys bullshit. Besides all that, the overwhelming majority of southerners were poor white share croppers who owned nary a single slave and worked those fields every bit as hard, but had to buy their own supper. My great great grandfather was interviewed for a book in 1912 about Texas veterans of the Civil War. Not ONE DAMN TIME does he mention slavery. He fought, just like men in ANY war, for the men beside him, his brothers, to survive. If you limp wristed liberals keep this up, you are going to awaken a sleeping giant. Which, unfortunately is the plan of the race-baiters trying to get us all at each other's throats. It's a goddamn battle flag and doesn't have a thing to do with slavery.
