It's kind of a bizarre idea that even though I was born in Vancouver, my dad was, and most of my immediate family was either born there or lived there, there's no way I could afford a house there. I grew up in Burnaby, and there's no serious way I could own a house in the same neighbourhood I grew up in. Half of the houses have been knocked down and turned into McMansions. There are a lot more fences now too. Family units separated from the outside world. As kids, we used to play outside. We'd cut through our neighbours' yards to get somewhere. Nobody cared. We can't blame it all on rich foreigners, but something went wrong.
