I think by now, every single person in Japan has met a western person. It's not like Japanese are so dumb that they can't understand that characters in movies aren't real people. Japanese get the news just like everybody else does of all the failed marriages, suicides, and bad behaviour of western celebrities. They meet English teachers and other westerners in their daily lives and can clearly see they are not the same as movie or TV characters. And, in the same way, westerners aren't that stupid that they think Japanese people are like manga characters or J-pop idols.
