  1. What surprises me is how so many Americans (and just about everyone else) has very little clue about their own family tree. Of course some people really get into it, but the average person knows almost nothing beyond grandparents.

Considering it was the British that built the foundations of the USA, I can see why they were upset about other Johnny-come-latelys who basically came in and benefitted from a whole system already put in place for them. The Brits did the fighting, set up the government, built the infrastructure, and got everything started, then various others just floated in to take advantage of everything.
