  4. 'Oreful air' in cockney rhyming slang. The coalmen at the time used the dust as snuff to enhance 'night 'vision for deliveries. It was of doubtful efficacy. Mushy pea soup was no delicacy, the poor could afford little else in a period of post war poverty. That their resulting flatulence contributed to the noticeable odour and reported rise in levels of hydrogen sulfide readings local to London are not widely taken seriously.
