I made it one year without alcohol after drinking a LOT since 1982. I would often drink daily but I was a musician and that`s the only way I could perform due to really bad anxiety and schizoaffective disorder. The effects of alcohol began to change as I got older and I was getting stupid. I haven`t quit but I proved to myself that I can. But it has a different effect now...I forget song lyrics and the chords to songs...the opposite of before.
