I kind of just figured out what the box thing is about. It's a peculiar hand gesture. What I believe it is , is a kind of physical/mental "cue" to do exactly what you said "lock in". Ironically it is exactly you said, he's locking in. If you notice people are often interrupting him and baiting him etc. and it's a way that he make a non physical border with his body and likely is a quite psychological as well. They do this also in something called nlp, neuro linguistic programming. Which are various mental strategies used for success. So indeed he's breaking out the box. Smart as hell, even though he's just miming the box, the way he uses it, it's solide as fuck.
