Prior to verdict, sentencing they are the accused, presumed innocent and what is said would be more restricted, restraint shown. Court during verdict, sentencing is to assert what is wrong, that everyone has to show a level of respect, discipline to court and the law, societies standards. That then is the accused or guilty being physically present. Not making it easier for them to bury their heads in the sand, dismissing what they have been judged as guilty of. Time to face the consequences is also hearing the judges opinion, sentencing and impact upon victims.

The VPS can be "updated... before sentencing, during appeals, tariff or parole hearings" As long as one was made before start of court. I expect if their behaviour to the victim or their statement/s in court is nasty or innaproppiate that could likely effect the Judges sentencing or tariff or later during parole hearings as no genuine remorse or respect is shown.
