  1. Immigration actually lowers the fertility rate by increasing the cost of housing and the population density. Hard to measure but people tend to have more children when the population density is lower. That's why even in the modern world, rural families tend to be bigger.

  2.  @thanatosdriver1938  Higher density = lower fertility so a population will reach an equilibrium over time. Obviously that's a simplification there are many other influences on fertility. The point about immigration it doesn't change our population significantly a hundred years down the track it just means our own genetic inheritance will be diminished and diluted. When the British (mainly English) first settled mainly empty North America they had a fertility of around eight children.
