Births are still very high in the least capable populations of the world especially in Africa.

@Fluxwux Yes that's true but African birth rates are still far, far beyond replacement. Some African countries are still going to double in size in just a few decades.

@rhythmandacoustics It's more complicated. The richest people might have children because they can afford to. The poorest people might have children because they're subsidised to and there is little opportunity cost. It's the productive people in the middle who have the strongest economic incentive not to. The people who struggle to provide the extra housing required, the extra food costs, the child care costs and afford the huge amount of time off work required. For many educated, intelligent people it comes down to the choice between a comfortable lifestyle of luxury holidays and cars and no children or children and economic hardship.
