@kirishima638 No, the Baltics aren't in Western Europe but if you want to see 17% inflation, look to Netherlands. If you want to mass demonstrations against the cost of living, look to Italy, France, Netherlands, Germany. If you think this is all about Brexit, you're not paying attention to what's going on in Europe.

@Nehemiah Scudder Your assumptions are wrong. 1) The British economy isn't actually shrinking relative to the rest of Europe. Baltic countries are much worse hit. British inflation is around the European average. Dutch inflation is almost 17% now, it's carnage. There have been huge protests this year all over Europe, just a few days ago tens of thousands of people were demonstrating in Prague. 2) If it's actually true that there's some EU funding which has not been covered by the British government (and that's NOT true for farming) then that's a deliberate choice by the British government. The point of Brexit is more CONTROL for the British people, NOT automatic presents from their own money. 3) Import/export restrictions are due mainly to deliberate revenge by Brussels, Paris and Dublin. For example, the Northern Irish borders sees 2.5 times more customs checks than Rotterdam, the biggest port in Europe despite the cross border traffic being a tiny proportion of the traffic going through Rotterdam. Why do you want to be politically united with an empire that behaves like that towards us?

@alisonwilson9749 Since 2016, UK's average annual growth has been almost identical to Germany's. You can't explain economic performance with a monocausal explanation like Brexit but even if you could, you would have to conclude it had no effect.

@invisiblehandofadamsmith Poland has official inflation over 17%, the government is becoming ever more authoritarian, economists are confidently predicting electricity black outs and I've seen people queuing half a day for firewood. Perhaps you live in Krakow without following what's going on around you?

@hastekulvaati9681 By that logic any country which is in the EU should be doing well. The reality is that every country in the EU except for tax haven Luxembourg has poverty. And currently there are huge protests all over the EU at the cost of living.

@purplerings1969 There are pluses and minuses with proportional representation but on balance I agree with you. I reckon the next couple of years will see a massive shake up in politics in any case. Not just in Britain. We're heading for a brutal recession, a collapse of living standards and such a heavy dose of reality should result in a more politically realistic electorate. I hope.

@niklaswikstrom78 Half of all EU custom checks are on the Northern Irish border with Eire and you tell me there's no aspect of political revenge? Brexit gives parliament the power to give the electorate what it wants. The EU constrained that power, it's blatantly wrong to argue that it didn't. Parliament so far continues to betray the electorate for example by increasing immigration. That's not an argument against Brexit, it's an argument for voting out the LabConLib hegemony.

@kirishima638 Actually, no, it's much worse in places like the Baltic countries where inflation is reaching over 20%. In Poland, people are queuing for half a day to buy firewood because electricity is expected to become unaffordable and even unavailable. There's real poverty appearing in Germany and Italy.

@purplerings1969 No serious economist denies migration pushed down wages and contributed to the housing crisis. If you think the current difficulties are primarily about Brexit, you should have a look at what's happening in the rest of Europe - huge protests, closing businesses and growing poverty.

@purplerings1969 I partly agree. Some of the people who pushed Brexit lied and immigration hasn't fallen because the politicians swindled the British people. Nevertheless Brexit is a prerequisite for getting immigration down. It allows a future government to do it if it wants to. In the EU, there's literally nothing we can do to stop the endless flow other than completely dismantling the welfare state.

The entire European economy is falling apart, there are mass protests in Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, Prague and various German towns, do you blame all that on Brexit too?

@YellowfinGrouper None of this is an endorsement of Brexit but it's childish to pretend Brexit is to blame either. There was a point AFTER Brexit when we had the highest growth of the G7 too. You would have been right to laugh at anyone who claimed Brexit was responsible for that for the obvious reason this stuff is complicated. Our trade with the EU has increased year on year. It's actually currently increasing faster than our trade with the non EU world.
