  1. Europe will never have a cheaper source of energy than Russian gas. LNG is intrinsically more expensive. North African gas is insufficient. Renewables will take decades further to become cost competitive. Europe should not have expected to put sanctions on Russia and actually arm Ukraine without Russia applying counter sanctions to Europe.

  2.  @ThunderjunkMcbuttram  The problem with heat pumps, they work fine when the difference in temperature between outside and inside is pretty small. But when it gets really cold in winter their efficiency drops right off. And that's exactly the time overall demand for energy in a cold country like Germany goes through the roof. For heat pumps to replace gas heating on a wide scale will require electricity vastly cheaper than anything available now. Imagining that an entire country like Germany can heat itself with heat pumps powered by renewable energy is totally unrealistic. Maybe in thirty years it will be if Germany returns to nuclear. But not soon.

  3.  @ThunderjunkMcbuttram  Sure deep in the ground doesn't change temperature so rapidly as the surface. I looked at getting a heat pump in Northern Europe recently - the economics just don't stack up. Maybe in the south of France or Italy or something it makes more sense. Anyway, electricity is so expensive now and it's likely to stay really expensive for many years so I don't anticipate it will become economic - at least for me. I'll revisit in five or ten years if there's a massive nuclear building programme in Europe.

  4. There's zero evidence the Russians intend to attack Poland or anywhere else. NATO fighting Russia in Ukraine would result in Russian nuclear strikes on NATO forces in Ukraine. If NATO responds with nuclear strikes, Russia will hit NATO cities.

  6.  桜 ᴹᵘᵏᵘ⁴² 👽   You misunderstand how electricity production works. Renewables are intermittent. At certain times they surpass coal. At other times, the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing. Electricity can still not be stored on a large enough scale. Gas is still needed for peak power production.
