In the Russian army just like in any other modern army, pay is handled by a bureaucracy. Commanders don't have access to it. Money gets paid directly into a bank account. People are a bit too gullible about anecdote based anti-Russian propaganda.

  28. I'm sure neither side did it deliberately but the best evidence is that it was an air defence missile. There's shrapnel there typical of a S300. A Gerand would have flattened the cathedral completely.

  29.  @steveosborne2297  But they're not. The Ukrainian offensive towards Kremina has ground to a halt and the large forces the Ukrainians have there are being outflanked to their south. Nothing big is happening around Svatove and even if the Russians did lose Svatove, it would be a dangerous salient for the Ukrainians exposing them to a Russian strike from the north along the western bank of the river. It's a bizarre place for the Ukrainians to be making a major effort at all.

What's actually been happening since the Russians withdrew from the north is that Russia has been using its enormous air and artillery advantage to bombard the Ukrainian army for months, inflicting horrendous casualties at little cost to themselves. And now the Ukrainian army is gradually starting to crack. The Russians just encircled some Ukrainian formations and made a big advance in the past few days, it's pretty suspect that this wasn't mentioned at all.

  38. Actually yes the Russians have captured about a similar amount of territory that the Ukrainians have over the summer, it's just the media doesn't report it. Besides which these tiny amounts of territory changing hands are irrelevant now that this has become a war of attrition - which Russia is winning decisively against a smaller, poorer country, despite all the Western military aid.

Pushing Russia, Iran, China and North Korea into an alliance is moronic but that's what's happened. It's not actually true Russia has no friends in Europe but to the extent that it is true, it really doesn't matter anymore. Russia's in BRICS and BRICS is taking off. Russia has new markets and sources of imports in Asia. Whereas Europe has permanently higher energy costs and permanently higher defence spending. Russia comes out of this better than Europe does. China and Iran are the biggest winners here.
