Netherlands and Denmark did detailed studies on this, on average only immigrants from other Western countries (or Japan) contributed more on average than the host population. Immigrants from non Western countries were a net cost and for many countries, a huge net cost. For example immigration has cost Netherlands 400 billion Euros overall. Also some immigrant groups commit vastly more crime than the host population on average. This is obvious to anyone who lives in Europe.

As for immigration being necessary, why? Most immigrants cost more than they contribute. Look into the Dutch and Danish studies quantifying the benefits of immigration - the Dutch found immigration cost them 400 billion over the years i.e. that it was a huge net cost, roughly equivalent to the entire benefit they got from North Sea gas. The reason is obvious. Most immigrants don't come from successful countries, they mainly come from parts of the world which are unsuccessful. They bring with them their culture.

The US views the UK as a vassal - largely correctly. An independent might take a more sceptical position on NATO and the US rule the world project. In particular, Britain's nuclear submarines are based in Scotland, moving them to England would be difficult and expensive, all the viable locations are big cities.

The big difference is America is importing millions of people from South America, Africa and Asia whereas Russia keeps immigration low because it wants to stay Russian. If you want to talk about a really low birth rate, Ukraine's was around 1.3 before the war started but has plummeted since then. We don't have accurate numbers but it's estimated to now be the lowest in the world, something like half what it was before the war.

The post war situation is going to be dire, so many working age men killed, so many young people left and huge debts incurred. The most productive parts of the country have been lost. So ambitious, educated young people who have not already left will leave and the population will plunge further.

The other isotope that's made with tritium is deuterium, it's not required for missiles directly but it is used in nuclear engineering. Russia has a large civilian and military nuclear industry it has maybe the world's largest uranium resources, it doesn't have a problem with materials.

Great culture, low population density, higher pay to cost of living ratio than England, mainly avoided mass immigration - so far. Excellent schools, free, high quality health care, great mountains and plenty of coastline within easy reach. The weather isn't terrible, it's a bit wetter and colder than ideal but it's not too different from England. I have a Dutch friend who moved to Scotland intending to stay for two years before moving to Canada, he now intends to stay permanently.

Russia pulled back from Kiev because there was an agreement. Then Kiev cancelled the agreement. Russia will be very reluctant to trust any pledges. In that case, Russia occupies the territory they want and what remains falls into anarchy and probably gets occupied by NATO armies.

  194.  @EyeOfMagnus4E201  Interesting points - I think you're underrating both the Russians and the Ukrainians. Have a look at the size of the professional Finnish army - it's tiny. Sure the American 101 division or British regular infantry or whatever are good soldiers but that's a pretty tiny number of guys. The point is both Ukraine and Russia but especially Ukraine are fighting mainly with conscripts/reservists. The pre-war Ukrainian professional army is gone just like the high quality pre-war British professional army was gone by late 1915. Dead or injured or at best diluted in a much bigger replacement of civilians. In Russia's case most of the guys fighting now are at least volunteers who have to do service anyway and sign on for Ukraine partly from patriotism, partly because the pay is pretty good. But there's plenty of the prewar professionals left too. The regular Russian army hasn't even taken high casualties apart from the VDV maybe. Only the pre war DPR/LPR guys have taken the brutal kind of casualties the Ukrainian professionals have. But the Ukrainian army now is mainly guys who were not soldiers before the war. Obviously some of them will now be battle hardened veterans but a lot don't want to be there at all. The average age is about 43 last I heard. Some are as high as 70. If Finland fought a war with Russia it's going to be the same thing. There'll be a tiny number of high quality well trained professionals but the vast majority of the Finnish army are going to be guys who don't get a choice. Many of whom would rather be with their families or safe overseas. Same for other NATO countries. As for Russian casualties the only reliable source we have is Mediazona who spends a serious effort tracking down obituaries and similar from Russian newspapers and websites. They only found around 40,000 KIA. And look at the chronology of when they are, it's mainly from 2022. Since the Russians got themselves organised their casualties just haven't been that high. The British MOD claims and US gov claims are just propaganda you can ignore just like Russian claims about Ukrainian casualties. I realise this isn't the website where people are going to want to hear Ukraine is getting a kicking but I'm following the fighting for a couple of hours a day and from where I'm sitting it's looking pretty damn one sided nowadays.

In reality, both French and British went through some crap generals before they found good ones and by the end of the war, the British army was pushing through Belgium whereas the French did almost no attacks because their morale had broken in 1917. In the continuation war, casualties were probably pretty similar. Again another Soviet victory. US casualties in Vietnam and Afghanistan were lower than those of their enemies, didn't prevent US defeats. Finland after WWII wasn't laughing about higher Soviet casualties they thought the war a huge national tragedy which left so many dead and their country smaller.

Most of Eastern Europe is in fact worse. As for the Russian economy, it's going to grow by 2% this year. It's hardly collapsing. And nor is its international trade. It's successfully replacing European markets with Asian markets. Finally, there's no sign Russia is interested in a cease fire judging by the statements of the leadership. Apparently, the Russian leadership believes it will win.

There is a fancy distillation way you can separate it (really cold distillation) but I think isotopic exchange is the normal method, anyway it's not a challenge for any country with a large nuclear industry.

Before the war Ukraine had a very large and well prepared army, I don't think the US would find that easy either. The whole war, Ukraine has had more men under arms in Ukraine than Russia has. The Russians took a huge amount of territory in the first days, yes the US could have done that too but would have faced the same problem the Russians have, ambushes on supply lines. If you think the US could magically brush all of that aside, you're ignoring the US experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, militarily much weaker countries than Ukraine. Also I hope it's obvious Ukraine would have collapsed long ago without the huge amount of NATO backing. The US has never faced anything analogous since Korea.

Ukraine is a huge country compared to Finland and you can't say the Ukrainians aren't brave tenacious soldiers but they're getting ground down despite all the Western aid. Are you sure Finns would be more effective man for man than the Ukrainians are? They wouldn't have the huge corruption problems Ukraine has so maybe but I doubt there'd be much in it. Don't dismiss Russia technologically either, they graduate more engineers than any other country in the world and they're world leaders in certain areas.

Millions of Ukrainians left. The Russians mobilised reserves after the Kharkov offensive defeat b ut since then they've been able to grow the army with volunteers only (yes, including convict cannon fodder). The Ukrainians have been pulling in more and more people. For the past year there have been vids of the Ukrainian army ambushing guys on the street to bundle them away into recruitment vans, even using an ambulance to ambush from. There have been battles with fists and even axes between guys trying to escape. The Ukrainian army even mined the western borders to prevent guys escaping into Romania.

And most of all, because of moronic US foreign policy, it now has excellent relations with Russia, the world's biggest natural resource supplier. Economic and communication links with Russia are quickly improving. Lastly, the Chinese military is (obviously) building up pretty quickly. For example look at the US debt to GDP ratio and its trajectory. You don't need to be an economist to see that's going to blow up. Whereas primary resource giants like Russia and Saudi Arabia are back in a big way. Physical proximity just isn't that important anymore. I've worked in teams spread all over the world and I do gaming with friends from the opposite side of the world Not a problem. Shipping costs nowadays are so cheap Europe imports coal from South Africa, South America and Australia. As for highly connected economies ... yes ... but how much of that is cause and how much is effect? African and South American economies could be integrated in the same way. Middle Eastern economies certainly could be. Where they're not it's political reasons and economic backwardness that holds them back. It's not lack of interconnectivity which creates the political problems and economic backwardness. And anyway, the NZ economy is pretty closely integrated with Australia's. Medium sized companies operate pretty easily in the other country. It's not that much easier even within the EU because of regulatory and language differences.

BTW Congo is neighbour of a lot of countries! Switzerland got a huge dividend from staying out of both world wars and acting as Europe's banker. And it has avoided the worst impact of mass immigration. I'd say those two factors are pretty important for explaining Switzerland's prosperity today. Also democracy works better there than just about anywhere else (congratulations).

Temporarily keeping those sluices closed at this relatively dry time of year would mitigate the flooding. That Ukraine has opened them - so far as we can tell, several major dams - makes it obvious the Ukrainian government wants to exacerbate the flooding. Both sides lie but the Ukrainian side's motives for destroying the dam seem to be stronger and deliberately exacerbating the effect is just further confirmation who did it.

An alternative to the US dollar doesn't have to be a single currency used by the whole world - I agree with you there is no contender to the US dollar emerging for that. International trade deals settled in the currencies of the parties to the deal are becoming more common, that's probably going to continue. An alternative could be in a basket of currencies. Consider how quickly Swift was circumvented. BRICS has got some problems to overcome but it's naive to dismiss it just because some of the members don't like each other. It's obvious to anyone paying attention the US hegemony is ending.

If you really want to measure territorial change you;re better off looking at the rate of changing in March April compared to Janurary Feb and compare Jan Feb to last year. The Kherson counter offensive has already failed, this was obvious by the time this video was released. As for the bridges .... the Russians have a huge fleet of heavy lift helicopters in the region.

Sure the Finns fought well in the Winter War but that wasn't what was important. What was important was the huge mistakes by the Red Army. After the Ukraine war the Ukrainians will have lots of nice myths about how well they fought. It won't save them from a catastrophic defeat will it? It won't matter that the Russians made bad mistakes early on because they learn from their mistakes and get their shit together. The countries which win wars don't need these myths as much. The reality of war is most guys are killed by artillery strikes and similar, your martial skills and individual merit don't count for that much in the scheme of things. Not in a real war like Ukraine. You can be the best sniper in the world and you get buried under hundreds of tons of rubble as a FAB500 hits your position.

And the decision to continue the war after Russia made its point and offered generous peace terms a month into the war resulted in the catastrophe for Ukraine now. There was a better alternative which was ignore what Biden wanted and settle with Russia. Cost of living just outstrips wages. Auditing a random sample found plenty of errors. Hard to know whether deliberate or not. The few disloyal people who sided with him identified themselves and can no longer be a threat. Surovikhin who was a bit too close to Prigozhin has been sent to Africa apparently. As for the weaker rouble, this is helpful more than anything. Russian energy exports are priced in foreign currencies whereas armaments and other government costs are paid for in roubles. Obviously if inflation got out of control that would be a problem but it hasn't happened so far. Russians are complaining about inflation and higher costs but are they complaining more than the Europeans or Americans? Not so far.

Although it's true Russian forces built up for weeks before the invasion it's also obvious the actual invasion was last minute and improvised. Chaotic even. The Ukrainian army and US army are roughly similar size. Russian satellites would allow Ukrainian missiles to target American airbases, logistics and command hubs. Russian SAMs would shoot down US aircraft. The US is basically an air/naval power, the naval part wouldn't help in Ukraine and valuable aircraft are vulnerable to cheap SAMs. It would be a long, hard slog.

Some good books are de Kaspar's Ukraine in the Crossfire (too old to cover the lead up to the invasion but some important background) and the most recent book on Ukraine by Jaques Baud - which does cover the proximate causes very well. You can find a summary on youtube, he's done some interviews.

Not to a country which was amongst the poorest and most corrupt in Europe even before the war. The debts and destruction from this war are going to make the 1990s look like the good old days. There are lots of Ukrainians here in Britain too, they don't always fit in as well as you'd hope, I think the expectation was that they were going to be like the Poles who are a pretty successful immigrant group. But the cultural differences and expectations of the Ukrainians have been .. different.

US soldiers are still in Syria even though the Syrian government doesn't want them there and the UN states this is breaking international law. When Kosovo was taken from Serbia at the end of the 1999 war, Yeltsin warned this was creating a dangerous precedent, in 2023, Putin used exactly the same justification to take the four oblasts from Ukraine.

To this day, there are NATO bases in Kosovo and NATO forces stationed there. I really don't get how you can't see how strong the analogy is. What's more, NATO did this first and at the time Yeltsin warned it was creating a dangerous precedent. Everything Russia did since has been a response to NATO's aggressive expansion. What is that "strong evidence".? There is plenty of evidence there was a genocide in Bosnia. There were thousands of people murdered - by all factions, of all factions. We know what happened, who did it, who the victims were. There's nothing comparable in Kosovo, not before NATO bombing commenced. You shouldn't be surprised by this, we had the same kind of media fabrications with both the Iraq wars. Do you remember the media telling us Iraqi soldiers were turning off incubators in a maternity hospital? Where are those WMD the second war was started to destroy? The actual ethnic cleansing was after the war when the NATO sponsored ethnic Kosovans killed, intimidated and expelled almost all the remaining ethnic Serbs. When NATO bombed Serbia, NATO aircraft attacked civilian targets including a television tower, the Chinese embassy and a passenger train. Deliberately targeting a television tower was officially a war crime but NATO dismissed this because it was "broadcasting propaganda". Compare to Ukraine - since the US sponsored (and funded) Maidan coup violently deposed the democratically elected president, Ukrainian nationalists and the SBU murdered hundreds of people including over 50 in the Odessa fire from which nobody was ever prosecuted despite hundreds of witnesses. The SBU abducted, tortured and murdered people. The Ukrainian army has been shelling what it claims are its own people since 2014 including showering Donetsk city with petal mines, mines which have little military utility but main adults and kill children. Ukrainian politicians openly talked about exterminating Russians. Even the Western media was alarmed at genocidal extreme nationalism in Ukraine. If Russia wanted to make a propaganda case for a humanitarian intervention, it had a lot of material to work with.

US and other NATO countries now recognise Kosovo as an independent country and Kosovo is on the path to join NATO. You want to argue that's not annexing territory like Russia annexed Crimea but the result is the same. Recognising the seized territory as independent as an intermediate step towards actually annexing it is exactly what Russia did in Ukraine. Russia recognised DPR and LPR as independent but accepted their joining the Russian federation as a result of popular referenda in those territories. The differences are insignificant and immaterial. Yes - hypocrisy is the most appropriate word for people with your position. And everyone outside of the West can see it.
