  1. An historical argument about Russian's problems with internal communications before the age of railways is extraordinarily naive. What's especially ironic is the two examples given: Napoleon's invasion and the Anglo-French attack on Crimea. The first ended with a Russian army in Paris, the second ended with a Russian victory as well.

  3.  @johnschwartz1641  I'm not claiming Russia won the war but both sides made concessions to get peace. The important point is any analogies going that far back are totally irrelevant now. Russia struggled in the 19th century because of internal communication problems. That all changed once it had a railway network - and it's a pretty excellent railway network. Peter Zeihan who claims to be a geography expert and a geopolitical export totally ignores that.
