And why would you believe a claim from "US officials"? Did you believe the Iraqi WMD claim? Did you believe the claims about the Afghani government defeating the Taleban?

@EyeOfMagnus4E201 Interesting points - I think you're underrating both the Russians and the Ukrainians. Have a look at the size of the professional Finnish army - it's tiny. Sure the American 101 division or British regular infantry or whatever are good soldiers but that's a pretty tiny number of guys. The point is both Ukraine and Russia but especially Ukraine are fighting mainly with conscripts/reservists. The pre-war Ukrainian professional army is gone just like the high quality pre-war British professional army was gone by late 1915. Dead or injured or at best diluted in a much bigger replacement of civilians. In Russia's case most of the guys fighting now are at least volunteers who have to do service anyway and sign on for Ukraine partly from patriotism, partly because the pay is pretty good. But there's plenty of the prewar professionals left too. The regular Russian army hasn't even taken high casualties apart from the VDV maybe. Only the pre war DPR/LPR guys have taken the brutal kind of casualties the Ukrainian professionals have. But the Ukrainian army now is mainly guys who were not soldiers before the war. Obviously some of them will now be battle hardened veterans but a lot don't want to be there at all. The average age is about 43 last I heard. Some are as high as 70. If Finland fought a war with Russia it's going to be the same thing. There'll be a tiny number of high quality well trained professionals but the vast majority of the Finnish army are going to be guys who don't get a choice. Many of whom would rather be with their families or safe overseas. Same for other NATO countries. As for Russian casualties the only reliable source we have is Mediazona who spends a serious effort tracking down obituaries and similar from Russian newspapers and websites. They only found around 40,000 KIA. And look at the chronology of when they are, it's mainly from 2022. Since the Russians got themselves organised their casualties just haven't been that high. The British MOD claims and US gov claims are just propaganda you can ignore just like Russian claims about Ukrainian casualties. I realise this isn't the website where people are going to want to hear Ukraine is getting a kicking but I'm following the fighting for a couple of hours a day and from where I'm sitting it's looking pretty damn one sided nowadays.

@debater452 You think military service isn't mandatory in Russia? The point is the size of the populations. In a serious war Russia would have a bigger army than the entire Finnish population. Finnish smack talk about Russia is ridiculous.

@Konstantin2004 Stalin let Finland off easy only because the Red Army was still fighting Germany. Otherwise, the Red Army would have taken Finland easily. It was always a minor front for the Soviets, they were concerned only to keep a buffer around Leningrad and protect the northern sea route. There's nothing more ridiculous than Finns boasting about how they could fight the Russians. They just don't have the population. Besides which the Russian army now is huge, experienced and battle hardened from two years of war. Compared to Ukraine, Finland would be a quick snack for a few months.

@Konstantin2004 Actual casualty figures are disputed but sure Soviet casualties in the Winter War were higher. Doesn't change the result though does it - a Soviet victory. In the continuation war, casualties were probably pretty similar. Again another Soviet victory. US casualties in Vietnam and Afghanistan were lower than those of their enemies, didn't prevent US defeats. Finland after WWII wasn't laughing about higher Soviet casualties they thought the war a huge national tragedy which left so many dead and their country smaller.

@EyeOfMagnus4E201 Yes Soviet Union was slightly bigger in population than Russia today but it had huge political problems and the military hadn't recovered from the officer purges. That hardly applies to Russia as of late 2023. The military is battle hardened, useless officers have been fired, armaments production is right up, look at how Russia is fighting in Ukraine nowadays, they're probably the most effective military in the world at least the most effective large military. in 1940, you could argue man for man the Finns were better at least given the time of year, you can't argue that now. Ukraine is a huge country compared to Finland and you can't say the Ukrainians aren't brave tenacious soldiers but they're getting ground down despite all the Western aid. Are you sure Finns would be more effective man for man than the Ukrainians are? They wouldn't have the huge corruption problems Ukraine has so maybe but I doubt there'd be much in it. Don't dismiss Russia technologically either, they graduate more engineers than any other country in the world and they're world leaders in certain areas.

@debater452 LOL your user name is debater, well debate this. You say Finland has a million reservists and every Finn is militarily trained. By the same standard, twenty something million Russians are militarily trained and officially there are something like twenty million Russian reservists. Is anyone seriously going to argue Russia could field twenty million men? Of course not. So why do you think Finland could field a million men? If you think Russian deaths in Ukraine are higher than what Mediazona can actually identify cool, tell them who all the missing people are they can't find.

Duda got recorded by those Russian prankster guys who keep pretending to the Poroshenko and he was really clear he didn't want a war with Russia. That's despite a lot of smack talk in public. The Polish military is struggling to recruit and retain guys since the war started because sane people don't want to be fighting a land war against Russia :P The narrative by Peter Zeihan is that the Russians are incredibly incompetent I'm just not seeing it. Earlier in 2022 yeah there was incompetence at times (not consistently) but it's getting pretty rare now that the Russians make obvious mistakes like having a couple of hundred guys in a barracks with their phones popping off giving away their location or sending fleets of tanks across minefields in unsuccessful attacks. Both sides were making those kind of mistakes, it's not so common now.

The US struggled against Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. You seriously think the US could fight Russia and China together in a conventional war without nukes? And if it does turn nuclear, Russia has more nukes than America does ignoring however many the Chinese now have too.

@Tyrgalon The difference is that Ukraine is a much bigger, stronger country than Finland. Second biggest military in Europe after Russia. Finland is a country of just a few million people. Only an idiot would talk about Finland retaking lost territory from Russia by force.

@theylied1776 Yeah it's pretty common for countries who loose wars to have national myths about how good they fought, it salvages some pride. Same as the South in the US Civil War. The problem is when this myth making gets out of control to the point where the Finns start smack talking their bigger tougher, battle hardened super power neighbour which could crush them easily if it wouldn't start WWIII then it becomes pretty ridiculous

@theylied1776 Warum sollten Sie das annehmen? What different would it make if I'm British? The thing is almost everyone thinks his own country/unit etc are great fighters. Sure the Finns fought well in the Winter War but that wasn't what was important. What was important was the huge mistakes by the Red Army. After the Ukraine war the Ukrainians will have lots of nice myths about how well they fought. It won't save them from a catastrophic defeat will it? It won't matter that the Russians made bad mistakes early on because they learn from their mistakes and get their shit together. The countries which win wars don't need these myths as much. The reality of war is most guys are killed by artillery strikes and similar, your martial skills and individual merit don't count for that much in the scheme of things. Not in a real war like Ukraine. You can be the best sniper in the world and you get buried under hundreds of tons of rubble as a FAB500 hits your position.

@theylied1776 Well if that's the parallel you want to make, we could take it further. Ukraine's deliberate antagonisation of Russia (i.e. pursuing NATO membership, talking about acquiring nuclear weapons and shelling Donetsk despite Minsk II) caused the Russian invasion in 2022. And the decision to continue the war after Russia made its point and offered generous peace terms a month into the war resulted in the catastrophe for Ukraine now. There was a better alternative which was ignore what Biden wanted and settle with Russia. Likewise after Britain went to war on behalf of the unrealistic and belligerent Polish dictatorship of 1939 (unrealistic because Poland was too weak to stand up to both Germany and the Soviet Union simultaneously when it could have negotiated with either) even after throwing Czechoslovakia under the bus, Britain decided to fight a war against the strongest military power in the world. It was just a dumb thing to do. Yes the final outcome was being on the winning side but it left the country weak, broke and the empire collapsed. Ukraine's not even going to have the consolation of being on the winning side when the peace treaty is finally signed. They already know this now, even Zelensky but it's too late to do anything about it. Bit like Churchill realised in the Yalta conference he was being thrown under the bus.
