The difference is, during the Cuban crisis, there was a sane, capable president in the White House who could and did talk to the Soviet leader and come up with a deal. Now, there is a demented incompetent in the White House who accuses the Russian leader of terrorism while at the same time committing sabotage like the Nordstream attack.
