The population has already halved since the end of the Soviet Union and the birth rate is close to the lowest in Europe, certainly lower than Russia's. The post war situation is going to be dire, so many working age men killed, so many young people left and huge debts incurred. The most productive parts of the country have been lost. So ambitious, educated young people who have not already left will leave and the population will plunge further.

He's actually wrong. People have more children when conditions get a bit tougher. It's not intuitive but apparently comfortable modern life does not inspire people to have many children.

@ Edward Dutton has written several books on this. Also J. Winter. It's usual that after a major war the birth rate increases. Happened with both world wars. Probably will happen with the Ukraine war too. A lot of those Russian guys will go home get married and have plenty of money for a house.

People they "captured" in Ukraine? You mean the ethnic Russians who rebelled against the post Maidan government long before Russia got involved at all?
2
@jlvandat69 If your guess is Russia will lose the war you obviously have no clue whatsoever. Your own government has just acknowledged Russia already won the war.

Russia currently has the drone advantage everywhere except around Pokrovsk. According to teh Ukrainians themselves.

Productive people have fewer.

@crescent4996 Western European countries have already been invaded without a fight. Even to criticise the invasion invites arrest and imprisonment. Why would any sane person fight for governments which want to protect Ukraine's borders but not their own?

@jesan733 The people having the babies in France are not French. And many of them actually hate France.

That's complete rubbish. Britain lost around 700,000 men in that war. It's a lot but in the 1910-1920 decade the British population increased despite this.
1
@danz1182 What you're leaving out is the huge emigration from Britain after the First World War frankly because better economic opportunities were available elsewhere. Otherwise the population would have increased by a lot more. Despite emigration AND the war, the population increased in the 1910-1920 decade.

@ "In some villages in the UK there were no men left" - do you have a single example?

@Erik_Ice_Fang Ukrainian demographics is vastly worse than Russian demographics. And Ukraine is ethnically much less cohesive than Russia. You obviously don't have a clue.

@jasonbern5185 I agree it's complicated. It's not anything alone. However, there is evidence that experience of tough conditions and danger does make people more inclined to want to have children afterwards. Ed Dutton looks at the evidence for this extensively. Perhaps experience of danger shakes people out of the unnatural complacency of modern life.

Yeah for someone who's supposed to be a demographer Zeihan comes up with some pretty stupid stuff. Then again the narrative is more important to him than logic or details.

"meat wave tactics" is a propaganda invention. Both sides use the same tactics in Ukraine. If anything, the Russians rely more on armour because they have armour, the Ukrainians rely more on infantry.
