  2. Guerrilla tactics only work when the density of men is too low. That was true at the start of the war with much longer front lines and before mobilisation. After the Russians withdrew to shorter lines and mobilised and trained a larger army, it's no longer easy to infiltrate.

  6.  @Zz_Mike-Hawk_zZ  I read Robert Paxton's book on Mussolini, it seems Mussolini's regime contributed a lot to unification but yes I can imagine the process was accelerated by the war too. It's probably true for most of the countries on the winning side.

  7. Also the Russians want to fight close to their own supply lines. Their supply problems in the first few weeks of the war were immense.
