  1. Consider this: time exists as a measure of motion. Feet per (unit of time). Quantity (gallons per unit of time). The better question is why Earth uses the time system it does. Granted, the earth takes 365.25 days to orbit the sun. Motion. It takes the moon 28 days to orbit the earth. Motion again. But why is the calendar 12 months? Why is a day 24 hours, not 10 hours or 100 hours? Why aren't there 100 minutes to an hour, and 100 seconds to a minute?
