After 9/11, New York City had no public safety or cellular communication due to the infrastructure being on the WTC. The amateur radio community turned out en masse to provide necessary communication services until the commercial service was restored. Operators were assigned to "shadow" City Hall officials, every fire station, every police and EMS station. They are the unsung heroes; but then again, we don't provide these services for any reason besides this: Because we can.

Despite the efforts of the HOAs, ham radio is still relevant after a disaster... unless you live in Florida. There, you're on your own.

@nine7295 You clearly are not a ham.

@charleswoods2996 PRB-1 required that "reasonable" attempts to accommodate amateur and CB antennas be made. As anyone who has had any experience with the American legal system knows all too well, the definition of "reasonable" is up for dispute.

@nine7295 That guy doesn't understand the advantages of decentralized, remote infrastructure free radio communication has. All that is required is coordination and a little savvy on the part of the participating person.

@rjy8960 I earned my Technician license in 1980, General in 1981, Advanced in 1985, and Extra in 1989. I was a field service technician in industrial instruments and process controls and can't tell you how many times I was the first guy at an accident scene with a radio able to get help. That was then. Today I don't bother to even use the cell phone to call 911. Why? The last time I called 911 they wanted my name, home address, asked me why I was where the accident was, and if I had anything to do with the accident. When I hung up on them they called me back and continued the interrogation. I figure that someone else can be a hero and deal with it.

Great, until the local repeater goes down. For serious public service work you need at least a dual band 50 watt mobile radio and a good antenna.

@shodwilliams You've got the right idea. Now, you need to coordinate with your local clubs and the county Emergency Operations Center. There needs to be a plan in place that is practiced at least twice a year so that everyone involved knows what they are supposed to do when disaster comes calling.
