@professorginz2379 Is it any better now? No matter how good it gets, it's never good enough. The first Spanish explorers found the LA basin to be filled with Native American campfire smoke.

There's a saying in racing: if it's not fast enough you haven't spent enough money.

I bought my 2005 1200 Roadster new, put 50K miles on it in the first three years, and currently have 83k on it. When the drive belt broke at 74k miles I replaced it myself in about one hour.

@Spike-sk7ql Depends on the type of relay.
5
@Spike-sk7ql Okay... here's a little education for everyone. There are a myriad of relay types. A SPST relay is a "single pole, single throw", which means that it has one set of contacts and can be either be normally (no coil power) open or normally closed. A common example is the horn relay. This is why, when you are troubleshooting, you have to be absolutely certain that you are putting the correct relay in the right spot.

This is nothing new. In 1997 I paid a garage to replace both halfshafts on a 1988 Taurus 3.0. They were ridiculously loose where they went into the transaxle. They were NAPA parts, and they sent a rep out to verify the problem. They refunded my money and I bought genuine Ford parts. In 2004 I replaced both front hub and bearing assemblies on my 1993 Dakota 4x4. I paid extra for genuine Timken bearings that came from Italy. They turned into spaghetti in one week! Auto Zone cheerfully refunded my money and I bought their house brand parts instead. No problems.

The Turbonique Black Widow! Crashed at 154 mph, IIRC.

There is an engineering axiom that applies to repairs: "If you haven't solved the problem, you haven't thrown enough money at it!" 50 years ago, we solved the oil starvation problem by adding an extra quart of oil. With the standard five quarts, at highway speeds three quarts were up in the engine, one quart was in the filter, and one quart was in the pan. Sustained high Rpm threw that quart up into the motor, and the engine will starve.

@reallifehardtruth4465 Australia had a slant 6 Hemi, IIRC.

I just read a story in which HD is embracing the Work From Home concept and is looking to "repurpose" its main headquarters building. All I can say is this: any job that can be done from home can be done from home in a low-wage country. Harley has ties in India and China, so when the axe falls don't say I didn't warn you.

@peanutbutterisfu I was the guy who replaced the hub and bearing assemblies, and I used a 1/2 inch drive ratchet handle, no impact gun. There was visible play in the bearings. They offered me another pair of Timkens but I couldn't do without my truck for a week.

I vote for a 340 Poly!

@cardboardboxification Around 10 AM or so...

Mechagodzilla!

@hansosl It tripped and fell down the Stairway to Heaven?

Back in the early Evolution days HD made a special Sportster model: the XLX61. The advertised it the same way: buy it today, trade it in for a Big Twin, and they'll give you the full purchase price for it. My question is...has anyone ever seen a XLX61? It's like they all vanished from the face of the Earth.

@jamesmedina2062 A "tune" doesn't alter the compression ratio, or the camshaft profiles.

It's actually related to how the fuel and oxygen pumps on the Saturn and Shuttle engines are configured. Gaseous hydrogen spins the liquid oxygen pump, and gaseous oxygen spins the liquid hydrogen pump. The reason why they are cross connected is the system will shut down if either component is missing.

Since these bikes had half of a Sportster engine I wonder if anyone ever put a whole Sportster engine in one.

The closest thing to transwarp drive on earth!
1
Why not? It has worked for the movie industry since the second James Bond film.

The problem is that both Ford and Chrysler were way ahead in the DOHC Hemi department. Bill France killed them both and Oldsmobile would have fared no better.

You should investigate changing the rear end gears. You're not shifting into third. Ideally, you should hit redline in top gear when you reach the traps. Some folks use redline plus 10% as the endpoint.

Here's the problem: with non-matching VIN numbers the myriad of computer modules will not communicate with one another and you have a dead car. The cure, like it or not, is to go through a dealership and buy the modules from them. You will need to provide proof of ownership and the new modules will have the correct information and will work properly. Been there, done that, but with a Sportster.

I put a 2 ounce shot glass of MMO into each cylinder of my 2005, 84,000 mile 1200 Sportster before winter storage and another shot glass's worth into the oil before spring startup.

If you read about Yamaha's legendary XS Eleven, you'll be surprised to learn that it sports a polyspheric cylinder head design. Yamaha states that the poly is almost as efficient as a hemispheric head.
1
How hard would it be to bore it out for 340 pistons and build a 340 Poly. The mascot is a scowling parrot 💪💪 flexing, like something you'd find on a WW2 fighter.

@Spike-sk7ql My post wasn't meant for you specifically; it was meant for everyone.

@michaelbean2478 Older CB radios have relays in them. They are usually the double throw variety and feature multiple contact sets to switch the antenna, microphone, speaker, etc.
1
@Spike-sk7ql The only application for a relay that always has power to the coil I can think of is the relay that activated a backup generator system. When the line voltage fails it drops out and the contact closure activated the control system.
