It's a physics thing...all batteries have a temperature range, and if the battery is too cold or hot the charge control circuits won't try to charge it.

@richardchambers3533 I think that I have Greta and John on speed dial...

As the fanboys keep saying, "this is the future. Get used to it."

@Baraka_Obama_ Nah, I deleted him when he started letting my calls go to voicemail.

@pepegano_3578 This is the real world, and evs aren't working for these people.

@wdbldr67 So then tell us why the Midwest is littered with dead, abandoned EVs?

@Xanthopteryx The engineering solution is this: The charger communicates with the car via WiFi or Bluetooth. Once the two shake hands and are on the same page, the charger receives temperature and charge status from the car. If the battery temperature is too low, the charger activates the battery heaters until the battery is warm enough to begin charging. Once charging begins the battery pack will produce its own heat and the charger will turn the heater off. This isn't rocket science. My cordless drill battery won't begin to charge if it's too cold or too hot. The indicator light just blinks until the proper temperature has been reached. Frozen connectors on the charging station can be remedied with a heat lamp that should be included in the charging station.

@Xanthopteryx Ok, then Tesla needs to fly some engineers to Chicago to find out what is going wrong and fix it.

@Xanthopteryx When I did construction and commissioning once everything was in place the stage I called "run it, break it, find it, fix it, repeat as necessary" began. Everyone marketing EVs should be out in the cold working on the problems.

@Xanthopteryx Car makers used to have testing facilities in the southwest desert and Alaska, but that costs money. The current practice is to design based on computer models and upgrade as necessary. I'd say that it's necessary.

And pets.

It's become painfully obvious that it's not working for people in the Midwest in general and Chicago in particular. The simple truth is that evs don't work for everyone everywhere all of the time. This is how the real world works.

@closrod335 Mythbusters did an episode on car air conditioning and how much fuel it uses. I suggest you watch it.
