@stefanl5183 , diesel creates a lot of oxides of nitrogen due to its higher temperature. All modern diesels have a catalyst and require Diesel Exhaust Fluid to operate.

@SweetLou0523 , what I remember is that the lead worked as a valve seat lubricant. Hardened valve seat inserts and improved valve materials were the solution. Octane ratings were much higher in the 1960s. My father's 1967 Ford pickup required a regular gasoline of no less than 97 octane. The owners manual for my mother's 1966 Oldsmobile Delta 88 had a section that warned against using 87 octane gas found in Mexico and other countries. Octane ratings were lowered after one of the Arab oil embargoes on the premise of getting more gasoline from a barrel of oil. I used to do work at a refinery and the chemist showed me how they created the octane ratings at the rack that filled the tanker trucks.

@abbyynorman2874 , she didn't invent radiation, she died from its effects. One word will suffice here: Cherenkov. If not for him, nuclear power would not exist, nor would nuclear weapons.

NASA learned decades ago that cosmic radiation shortened the life of solid-state space hardware. If they hadn't learned how to eliminate this the Voyager probes would have stopped working long ago. If you recall the movie "Space Cowboys" the IKON satellite used vacuum tubes.
