@mattferrigno9750 Didn't Rocket Raccoon say that Earth was the trailer trash of the galaxy?

Scientists used to believe that our radio and television signals would act as a beacon. The truth is that thanks to directional antennas and the inverse square law, not much RF escapes to give away our location.

@chucklindenberg1093 depends on the distance, the transmitter power output, the antenna gain, and the sensitivity of the receiving equipment. Radio waves in space get weaker and weaker until they fade into the noise level.

@iPeter Nokia or BlackBerry?

Listen to the deleted scene from Alien where they play the beacon signal.

@thursoberwick1948 , you guys should hear what Digital Radio Mondial sounds like on an analog radio. During the last good solar cycle I encountered these signals that could best be described as the voice of an angel. After several weeks of fruitless searching I called an FCC watch office. The watch officer dialed the frequency, listened intently for several seconds, then incredulously said "What IS that?!" I said "I was hoping you could tell me". He said that it was European in origin but had no more info on it. The signals are found between 26 and 27 MHz.

Ok, here's an answer: think about kicking a field goal in football. The farther away from the goalposts, the better the chances are of missing. If an asteroid can be detected early enough, and its trajectory calculated, the better your chances are at diverting it. Landing a rocket motor, or pushing it like the Hammerhead Corvette will get the job done. But... Early detection is the key, plus the rocket motor should be already built and ready to go.

There have been 5 mass extinction events throughout history.

Actually, nuclear powered propulsion was developed and successfully demonstrated by Westinghouse Astronuclear in the late 1960s. Considering how classified it all was there's a surprising amount of information about it here online. Unfortunately, an international treaty banning nuclear reactors in space has kept us right here puttering around in our solar system.

There are a lot of factors not taken into account here. The first is mythology, legends, and folklore. The second is mass extinction events.
