@rustiecage1874"...a small portion..." The current law allows the garnishment of 50% of the "obliger's" GROSS pay, not take home. It also allows judges to assign various debts in excess of the 50% guideline. So, back in the times when industry was dying in the Pittsburgh area, men often found themselves with more debt than pay, and the court's response was to jail them. If they were given a chance to explain, the judge would tell them to "get another job" and give them 30 days to get a job. It was a very nasty, one-sided system, with "you WILL support your wife and children in the manner of which they are accustomed" being a common demand from the judges.

Here in Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh drivers used to routinely receive parking tickets from Philadelphia. The procedure to make it go away was eventually boiled down to proving that you and your car weren't in Philly on the date and time written on the ticket. For most people, that meant having your boss fill out and sign a notarized affidavit. A few had their mechanic state that the vehicle was in the shop. Where this can get sideways is when the DMV says that you're clear, but you start getting calls and letters from collections agencies. This happened to a guy at work, and he eventually had to pay a lawyer to get it to stop.

@tripplefives1402 If everyone agreed on the definition of "reasonable" there would be no use for the legal system.

@mattgayda2840 Family Division is where flunkies from traffic court go. It's the last stop before Amazon.

@famousamoso7 Between two consenting adults? Are you good with Big Brother listening to your Alexa or smartphone too? Will you be good with being arrested for supporting the opposing political party? Da, Comrade?
15
@annelarrybrunelle3570 Both, along with poor police work for not having swept the car before allowing it to be auctioned off.
14
It's all in the eye of the beholder, and it literally greases the skids of the legal system.

I can see the jury pool now...Gort, Robbie the Robot, Bender, Rosie from the Jetsons, The Bicentennial Man,

@tuvoca825 Don't know what Colorado's child support law is like, but Pennsylvania can (and does) force men to pay support for someone else's biological children. They use a "best interests of the child" yardstick, and if you've been paying for someone else's child you will continue to pay.

@jrstf And in releasing the Warren Commission uncensored report...

@C.Church Wasn't Shredder a character on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Very unusual for the system to go after one of its own. There's a joke here: "Why haven't you ever heard of a shark attacking a lawyer?" "Professional courtesy."

@Gilhelmi Young Sheldon did that too. When he tried to buy yellow cake the Feds showed up.

The "knock sensor" is there to prevent the premature detonation of the fuel/air mixture in the cylinder. It does that by sending the computer a signal that alters the spark timing. When gasoline burns properly the pressure rise in the cylinders is smooth and predictable. When the mixture explodes you hear a knocking sound caused by the explosion. The cylinder pressure caused by the explosion is much higher than the pressure from proper combustion and will destroy the engine. The octane number on the pump is a measure of the gasoline's resistance to detonation. Premium gas has the most resistance.

Let me tell you a chess story... In early 1997 I was building and commissioning two Westinghouse gas turbine power generators. The control system, the Ovation, had a chess game built in. I was told that it was there to teach the operators how to use the system. I started playing it during slack time and always lost. Always. Until the day we were doing a full load test. I got lucky and won. Both units immediately tripped offline. The system failed to log anything that would have caused the trip. During the post-mortem I was asked where I was and what I was doing. I said that I was in the motor control center, watching the screens. I figured that telling them that the units tripped because Hal was angry about losing a chess game was a little too far out of left field. But I never played chess on the system again. Later versions of the Ovation had the chess game deleted, so maybe I wasn't the only one who experienced this.

@undrhil Lawyers weren't making money from it, so...

@phillycheesetake "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private". Deal with it.
6
It's a revenue scheme.
6
@turkeyssr Yeah, really, good luck with that. When I was separated from my wife I took a Dodge Caravan that was in my name only. When the judge, Judge Kaplan, ordered me to give it to her he became incensed when I asked him about "unconstitutional taking". He asked me if I'd like to argue it with him after six months in jail, and doubted that he'd change his mind.
6
@barryraymond9004 In effect, the government did take my van, and ordered me to change the name on the title. Because it was in my name only there was no question of ownership. I showed the cops the title and registration when I took possession of it. My wife could have driven the other car but wanted the van instead and the courts forced me, under threat of imprisonment, to surrender it.

It's more like the old Soviet Union than they're willing to admit.
6
@Maintenance_Mark What would it take to prove God's existence? Like Bruce in Bruce Almighty or Even Baxter in Evan Almighty?
6
@Maintenance_Mark I gave you an opportunity to provide examples of "acceptable proof". You choose not to.
6
@M167A1 When a police practice becomes a revenue generating device then the courts get involved. That's the usual MO.

@barryraymond9004 This incident took place early on, and I left her a car in good working order. I needed the van for work. This judge was arrogant, and we would clash again over grandparents visitation rights. He was pissed because I had gotten the lawbook from my state representative, and in retaliation gave me visiting rights only when I was home. At the time I was on the road, only coming home once a month, and my dad was terminal with cancer. This sonavabitch called me a "rotten father" because I had to travel for my job. Judges play games because they can. The courtroom is their kingdom, and God help you if they don't like you.
5
@Maintenance_Mark I just reread the thread, and you've confused me with another poster, Wil Neal 801.

Interested in your thoughts on Jack Smith obtaining the cellphone records of a sitting president. I remember Watergate, and this is clearly leagues beyond mere tapes.
5
@TheSiriusEnigma All the municipality has to do is to "condemn" the land that the bike trail is on. If they argue that the bike trail is a "better use for the community" the deal is done. Zero compensation for the landowner.

What if the defendant is is a mute?

@Fireguy97 It's simply inventory, not rocket science. Contents of Box A-1: "One Timex digital watch, broken. One unused prophylactic. (disgusted, picks something up with his pen) One 'soiled'. One black suit jacket, one pair black suit pants. One hat, black. One pair of sunglasses."
4
@pattyeverett2826 Don't leave home without it!
4
@johngalt97 If it gets removed, it gets removed. No big deal.
4
Let me tell you about the "takings clause". When my wife and I separated I took possession of a vehicle I had sole possession of. The judge hauled me in and demanded that I return the car to her or spend six months in jail. When I brought up the fact that this violated my constitutional rights he said "That's an interesting concept. Let's discuss it six months from now, or are you going to hand over the keys?" If you are unfortunate enough to land in Family Division, you'll quickly learn that the judge, and the judge alone, defines what your "rights" are, and that the "rights" of THE CHILD" supercede everything else.

@markstoudt7769 One could argue that we are in fact under the rule of a king...
4
I had a cat that did that. Didn't stop him from getting belly rubs.

Pump jockey and stocking shelves were entry level jobs usually done by high school kids. You learned something about cars, people, and life in general.
4
@jasonrodgers9063 The local, family owned station was the last holdout. If they knew you you could pump first and pay after. Handy on a motorcycle. I was coming back from New England and had just pumped $100 of gas. When I went to pay for it with a C note he said that he couldn't accept it. I pointed at the pump, and he said ok. Now the station is owned by a different family and it's prepaid only.

@TimoRutanen Different countries, different customs. If you travel internationally it's wise to do the work and research the customs of the country to which you are traveling. To wit... Britney Griner complained about the Russians not reading her her rights.
4
@Cheepchipsable Respect for the law comes from the top down. It's been decades since our leaders in Washington actually followed the law.
4
Me, myself, and Irene?
4
@mwduck How about a fart in the jury box?
4
@Maintenance_Mark I didn't make ANY "positive claims". Your statement merely reminded me of the two movies and the protagonists' attempts to disprove that God, as portrayed by Morgan Freeman, exists.
4
@Okillydokilly69 I still remember when the only things open on Sunday was company owned gas stations, movie theaters, and restaurants. If your car broke down Saturday night you weren't fixing it until Monday.
4
@GSP-76 could give you a list of places that I used to work for that forced me to work Sundays and holidays. There's videos of the last two being imploded on here. The last time they pulled that crap I had a kidney stone attack and didn't go to work. My family and I had a great day at the baseball game, though. After working for almost 50 years I can tell you this: It doesn't matter if you're there or not. When they shutter the place, you get tossed like a used condom. The company's loyalty is to the stockholders and investors. My loyalty is to my paycheck and my family. When I found a better deal I was gone. Every time I quit a job I already had another one that paid better waiting for me.

One of the Depression-era bandits wryly observed that you get the same amount of time for robbing a bank as you get for robbing a gas station.
4
@L337f33t Isn't that wonderful? It's almost like politics.

@3rd-eye-neenja563 Don't forget wetlands. If there's a puddle on the land after a rainstorm it becomes a wetland and the EPA will be all over it, especially if they find tadpoles.

When I ride my motorcycle I wear my protective gear. Bikes and scooters are subject to the same laws of physics and I see them in tank tops, shower shoes, no gloves or glasses. I've been flipped off by those who choose to ignore traffic laws, signs, and signals.

@mawi1172 Ever seen "Men in Black"? Tow truck driver hooks up to exterminator van that's illegally parked. Bug comes out with a shotgun. Driver isn't impressed and pulled his pistol. Bug blows tow truck driver away and drives off. There's a cautionary tale here about what to do and what not to do when someone is pointing a gun at you.

@Marty's 4x4 It says that right on the money.
