I bought one of those, a 1988 Taurus, in 1994. It had 64,000 miles on it. It didn't make it to 70,000 before I had to replace the engine, the 3.0. The valley looked like it was covered in roof tar.

I typically do less than 5000 miles a year, and change my own oil. I use full synthetic. This year Carfax is telling me that I don't have to change the oil for two years. Not doing that. It'll be changed next July.

@noconsentgiven There are articles on Bob is the oil guy about the ill effects, believe it or not, of changing oil too often. Something about the additive package not being given enough time to do its job.

@t.s.818 In the gutter? If you have a garage or drain in the driveway that's where it goes.

@noconsentgiven The old rule was that if you couldn't see the marks on the oil dipstick it was time to change oil. When I used to ride Japanese motorcycles they all have a little window and when the oil became dark it was time to change it. Those bikes lubricate the engine, transmission, and clutch with the same oil and I don't think that having clutch friction material floating around the engine is a good thing.

@adairjanney7109 When I was doing 3000 miles a month, mostly interstate driving, I was changing oil every month. Switching to Delvac was a good idea.

You can't generalize like that. It all depends on how you drive. When I did field service I was driving 30,000 miles a year, mostly highway driving. I started using Mobil Delvac in my 1993 Dodge Dakota 3.9 and changed it every 10,000 miles.

@DaveC_TN The motor was full of what used to be exotic hot rod parts. Windage tray. Roller rockers and lifters. Forged pistons and con rods. Pretty impressive list of goodies. I bought a long block from Ford and I really liked that car.

@johnnysprocketz Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player!

I had a 2000 Durango with the 4.7 sludge generator. Mobil Delvac was the cure. Traded it with 133k and the motor was clean and had great oil pressure. The additive package in diesel oil is much better than gasoline oils.

@alb12345672 Certainly. 50 years ago the best oils were rated SE, and the change interval was 3,000 miles or six months. The interval was less for taxi and "severe service" uses, and vehicles driven in dusty climates. The manufacturers recommended that if you drove from New York to LA that you have the oil changed at both ends of the trip.

@jays106 When I traded it in it had 186,000 miles on it and was still running strong. That's a good 120,000 miles later. The transmission problem the cars were infamous for was solved when the backup lights stopped working and I had to replace the switch on the transmission. I had the struts replaced with Monroe SensaTracs and the car was an excellent handling car. Sometimes I miss that car...it was roomy and comfortable, good on gas.
