I suggested to the Energizer people that they salute the two rovers by putting the Energizer Bunny on Mars. They replied that although they liked the idea they were unable to use anything that didn't come from their ad agency.

It proved that Galileo was right.

Field service at its finest! Anything, anytime, anywhere. That's our mantra.

They, along with the twin Pioneers, and the New Horizons probe will probably outlive the planet and the solar system. I have a vision of our first FTL capable starship retrieving all five probes before they become hazards to navigation.

If I had to pick just one, it would be when the wheels stopped on Atlantis and the shuttle program came to the end. But...a month or so ago I had a dream where I was a crew member that was docking with and powering up a genuine, FTL capable starship. It was cold inside. Everyone else was in their 20s and 30s, I'm almost 70. One of the "kids" said, with amazement, "You're from the Shuttle era! Tell us what it was like!" That time is yet to come, but I have faith that it will come.

The ultimate factor that will limit the communication range in free space is the noise floor of the universe at the probe's transmission frequencies. The New Horizons probe has a 100 watt transmitter versus the 20 watt transmitter of the Voyagers and so will have a larger usable signal before its RTG deteriorates to where it is unable to power the spacecraft.
