  1. Disney realized that they painted themselves into a corner after the last movie and now must reboot the universe to keep the interest up and the money flowing. Now it's just a question of how they do it. Palpatine's recent return and the fans' acceptance of it has shown them that it's possible. Now the Star Trek folks are looking for ways to eliminate the Kelvin timeline for the same reason.
