@TheraPi , Wayne Hale's blog has a very interesting read on those explosive bolts. Check it out.

The first use of the "steely-eyed missile man" phrase...

What I remember is that the engine starts are staggered 120 milliseconds apart was to keep the sonic shockwaves from destroying the launch tunnel. It was interesting to see bricks stuck into the fence.

A couple of things... There is a forensic medical dissertation available on the internet. It reads like an episode of "Quincy". It's basic conclusion is that the astronauts died instantly from the G-forces incurred when the orbiter went into a spin roll after losing the left wing. The instrument readings were all failing offscale low. This indicates a failure of the current powering the sensor. All of the failures were common to the legacy data collection system so they believed that the problem was a failure of that system. The orbiter was lost seconds after the tire pressure sensors went offscale low. The tires are inflated with 300 psi of dry nitrogen. The plasma in the wheel well caused the gas to expand and rupture the tires, which caused the loss of the wing. When the left side tires were recovered they were turned inside out by the gas expansion.
