  1. Older capacitors certainly had more leeway. For example, 25 V models could reach 35 V without problems. They were bigger, but more reliable.

  2. That plague really broke my faith in liquid electrolyte aluminum capacitors. Now I use solid polymer capacitors, and I make sure they are not liquid electrolyte in disguise (yes, those exist to mislead). Anyway, the many capacitors from Panasonic that I've used never failed.
