@queenbeekeeper Worse than lining the core, the graphite was being used as a moderator closely around the fuel channels. Because it was not 100% pure, some of the impurities got activated. For instance, if you happen to have an atom of Cobalt 59, it will be activated to Cobalt 60, which is highly radioactive. That is just an example, and more elements can be activated. Even the carbon itself can be activated, although it does not decay as fast as other elements, and it is less radioactive (though still nasty). There is also Cesium and Iodine isotopes from the fuel itself, which are way more nasty, on par with Cobalt 60.
