Things evolved a bit since. The Pace videos are the best in that regard. They correctly state that not too little nor too much solder should be used, ever. Too little solder can lead to a joint that can be cracked easily, and too much solder can lead to a lifted pad, because there is no way to disperse the forces through the joint. Often, in the internet, you see guys making solder tutorials and doing mistakes like making "ball joints". I used to do that mistake. Nowadays, the only bad thing I do is to snip the wires after making the connection.

@cme98 Lead free is terrible. There is only one "green" solder alloy that I find acceptable, and that is the traditional lead solder. It is green because less products go to the landfill due to cracked joints, tin rot or tin whiskers.

@elmariachi5133 Fiberglass pencils. Unlike erasers, they leave no residue.

@joewoodchuck3824 The 63/37 solder has a very well defined melting point. No "plastic" (candle wax) state whatsoever.

That is the reason why you don't heat the pad or the lead first, or transport molten solder with your iron. The materials should be heated only when the connection is formed (that is, the solder is added).
