  1. Blaming the rise of Islamic terrorism on political oppression, particularly by the west and the US, is one of the hallmarks of the regressive left. Islamist movements are based on their own ideas and motivations. Their complaint with Saudi Arabia is that it is too secular, not that it's too oppressive.

  2. Most broadly a regressive leftist is a leftist who hold some illiberal principles, usually in the pursuit of what they consider just ends. Islamophilia is just one of the more obvious examples.
