@k.c.r.5974 They had to smuggle unofficial items. They couldn't sneak a bat on board.

@Orophile_303 The didn't destroy the technology. When Apollo was cancelled they had a program to come up with a final mission to use the remaining equipment. It ended up as the Apollo-Soyuz test project and Skylab. Skylab was put in orbit with the last working Saturn V rocket. They even considered a Venus fly by mission.
