They had the M-1 carbine in WW2, but military used full power 30.06 rifles as the base infantry weapon. It wasn't until after the Korean War that they switched to the smaller round.

@semperfi-1918 If my guess is right, the 308 is the same thing as the 7.62 x51 that the M-14 fires, which is basically a WW2 rifle with a bigger box magazine.

@yeahsteeeve They don't know anything about guns. The AR15 is a carbine, less powerful than a full sized rifle, such as typical hunting rifle, but more powerful than a typical pistol.

The AR wasn't developed until the 60s. When the US first went to Vietnam the military had the M-14, which is a more powerful, 7.62 x 51, select fire rifle, but it doesn't scare progressives because it has a wood stock. Then they switched to the M-16 which was weaker and more prone to fowling in the dirt. The idea was to fire more bullets, which are smaller cartridges, so you can carry more.

The AR fires a 5.56 x45 is one of the smallest rifle rounds. That's one thing that's annoying about the gun phobic liberals. They would ban a bb gun that looks "military" but a rifle that fires a 30.06 with 4 times the power of the 5.56 would be OK to them.

The most deadly guns are the guns the Dem politicians aren't outraged about -- a big game hunting rifle, which is the same thing as a sniper rifle.
