The 2008 recession was global even though it was caused by a US housing market bubble, that was exacerbated by bad US loan policy.

@ShrexyGuy A lot of people were involved in real estate investment. You buy a large house on a low rate mortgage, then sell after it's price goes up. It works until the market tanked, the banks raised the interest rates, and the house is worth less than the mortgage.

@ashishpatel350 They have both variable and fixed rate mortgages. The people who gambled with variable rate mortgages went under.
