  1. They actually seem more like a cross between Jeffry Dahmer and a sociopathic criminal gang, like those they used to have in Central Park in the 80s, than humans. There's more orderliness and civility in human warfare. Typically the losing side can surrender, and negotiations often happen.

  2. It's a different question, whether that understanding exists, and whether it is consistent. Already in ancient times, the separatist tribe might get attacked, but typically if they lost the war the survivors would be captured and made slaves, rather than all killed.
