  1. The most likely explaination is bad and lazy writing. The virtual world had some silly and non-sensical rules in the first movie, introduced as plot devices, such as the need to use particular telephones to exit the matrix and that loosing a connection without an exit will kill you. You can lose consciousness completely in our world, such as with anesthetic, and you don't die. But if a movie has an engaging plot, or action, ridiculous or nonsense plot devices wont ruin it.
