+darvinst The American are the only nation to send men beyond low earth orbit, orbited the Moon in 9 missions, landed on the Moon 6 times, and even drove a car on the Moon. You even felt the need to pad the Russians' resume by including the genitalia of the astronauts.

@jimmyfly Frank Borman (Commander of Apollo 8) "I would rather die than make a false abort." I'm sure that attitude is common among astronauts making a first attempt at a Moon shot, and knowing there are serious risks.
6
Because the USSR and USA were in a cold war, obviously. And rocket technology can be used for weaponry. We do cooperate today, no thanks to the Democrats who want to sabotage US Russian relations because of their butthurt over the election.
4
I'm inclined to think that the Soviets didn't just suffer setbacks but rather the N1 rocket was a lemon. They built four and had four catastrophic failures.
3
That sounds like the plot of Superman 4. Two problems: 1. Superman doesn't exist. 2. Superman 4 sucked.
3
Putin has been in charge for decades. That's hardly a change. Obama congratulated him also. That's why I don't like the Democrats. Obama attacked Romney for considering Russia the main threat to the US. Now the Dems have flip flopped for purely selfish reasons.
3
Yep. It's the first one across the finish line, not the first one out of the gate who wins.
2
@jimmyfly They would rather die rather than making a false abort. And it's not always clear when they're out of options.
2
The LM would actually have to crash, to be a complete disaster. If they ran out of fuel, they would immediately fire the ascent stage and doc with the command module.
2
If Kennedy's speech were made today he would get attacked for not being gender inclusive. We'd have to wait decades until there were women test pilots to recruit as astronauts.
2
The government doesn't design the stealth aircraft; it's all private companies.

After reading these USSR versus USA comments it's clear that the USSR was driven and achieved some early advances in space exploration. But the USA out did them in pure technical achievements and ability. USSR-first orb in space versus USA-first spy and weather satellites. USSR-first dog in space versus USA-first onboard computers.

User Name No. Several of the modules making up the ISS were put there by the Shuttle. This dick wagging is silly. Because the Apollo program proved the limitation of the Soviet space program. The US could travel beyond low earth orbit while the USSR just succeeded at creating some of the largest chemical explosions.
1
The Soviet space program is impressive for what it accomplished despite their economic system.
1
It seems odd that Nasa didn't trust the Apollo 10 crew, so they put less fuel in the ascent stage of the LM. Any glory, of being the first to land on the Moon, would be overshadowed by their mutiny.
1
If they ran out of fuel before landing, they would just fire the ascent engine and return home. There was no doubt a good chance that they would crash rather than abort being so close to their goal.
1
@jimmyfly If they didn't abort during a failure at launch they would also die. They were obviously willing to take risks, or they wouldn't have been selected.

Build a wall around them, and make Mexico pay for it.
1
In math-physics we set the speed of light and plank's constants to 1.
1
Good thing the Democrats want to renew the Cold War, just to scape goat their election loss.
1
I don't like the black lives matter movement, but those NYC cops, and their acquittal pisses me off.
1
The Apollo astronauts should have put a flashing red beacon on the moon.
1
So the Moon landing hoaxers would shut the F up. Buzz Aldrin got stalked by one of them.
1
Who's going to be the first one to die on the Moon? Their corpse would be mummified. What would be left in a million years?
1
They can probably get significantly more thrust out of the same engines with only a single use. I think they should build reusable shuttles designed to be used only in space, with fuel lifted with non-manned rockets.
1
Moon belongs to USA now.
1
It makes more sense to launch a nuclear powered rocket into orbit. Then dock a manned capsule with it.
1
It doesn't sound like the SLS rocket is better than the Saturn V. Nasa reminds me of the automobile industry in the 70s and 80s, building worse cars than in 1969. But they had epa and fuel economy standards hampering everything. What's nasas excuse?
1
I think the study of this footage is crucial to rating the rocket safe for astronauts.
1
The Space Force should see this.
