There's a big controversy in 2006. Perlman's proof was confirmed. But other mathematicians expanded his proof and published a long paper with the title "The first complete proof of the Poincare conjecture".

@tribalismblindsthembutnoty124 That was part of what pissed Perlman off about the field. The journal was later forced to retract that title. Perlman never published his papers, but they're on the arXiv and recognized with solving the problem.

It took mathematicians so long to check Grigori's proof because it was so terse. It was just a couple 30 page papers. People have written 400 page expositions of his work. You can find his work on the math preprint arXiv.

I think it was Moscow State. He got offers from several places after his solution to the Poincare conjecture, such as Stanford. But he turned them down.
