Actually, all engines are air cooled. But most engines use a radiator to cool the engine, with coolant passages and a water pump. The only exception would be the top classes of drag race engines which are cooled by the fuel, alcohol and/or nitromethane.

That's because the air is cold at altitudes, and you're always going fast in a plane. If you drove a car 100 - 200 mph all the time, you wouldn't have overheating problems.

It also might have to do with GA piston engines running at low RPM. My dad owns a Cirrus 22. It has a 9L 6 cylinder that produces 315 hp, and is turbo charged. It only runs at about 2700 rpm. That's because the prop can't turn too fast. If the engine was to run faster, it would need a gear reduction. The prop turns at about 2700 rpm, and the blades are angled to produce more or less thrust.

@Well_Theres_Your_Problem Probably the rotor blades producing huge airflow. Egines typically run at at least 75 C.

@Well_Theres_Your_Problem Dude. What crawled up your ass? I never said it wasn't air cooled.
