  1. American car manufacturers didn't produce a v6 back then. A inline 6 was the economy engine choice. They didn't get good mileage though. I had a 69 Mustang with powerful small block, and a friend had a 70 Duster with a 6. They both had bad mpg but the 6 had no power.

  2.  @Joshg1984  But it didn't. Both cars got 12-15 mpg, but the Duster was totally slow.

  4. In the early 80s it was remarkable how they were able to get so little horsepower out of a 350 ci V8. In 1969 the base engine was either a 300 or 350 hp 350. Then the 427 had different ratings starting at 390 hp.
